More about Mori Vegetarian Tea House and Residence

MORI RESIDENCE

Fully restored since July 2015, Mori Residence is a boutique guesthouse combined with tea house hidden on a quiet street of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Malacca, namely Jalan Kampung Kuli. The many residents living along the street today are of sentimental value, constituting a very interesting neighborhood.

"Mori" refers to the woods in Japanese, also translated as forest. The dominant element in the boutique guesthouse and tea house is wood to match its modern and heritage design. It has a total of five fully air-conditioned rooms, one of which has an attic as its distinctive feature. Each room comes with a private bathroom. The tea house on the ground floor is perfect for chilling over a cup of tea in a comfortable environment. Our guests are also entitled for a session of free tea ceremony (during specific days and times only).

The boutique guesthouse and tea house is only two-minute walk to Jonker Street (night market). It is located in close proximity to the major tourist attractions and famous eateries in Malacca, making it an ideal place for your family and friends to fully experience what the heritage city has to offer.

KAYA RESIDENCE

Kaya Residence is located above Kaya-kaya Cafe, along the Blacksmith Street, which is known today as Jalan Tukang Besi. It is only one-minute walk to the famous Jonker Street (Jonker Walk). As you stroll along the street, you will see a blacksmith that carries out smithing process every day using traditional method.

This building has its very own interesting history. Kaya-kaya Cafe on the ground floor used to be an old Chinese liquor store during pre-war period. The Japanese had to bring their own containers to the liquor store. The storekeeper would then scoop liquor from a huge jar to fill the containers, and the Japanese would drink the liquor on the spot. Since years ago, the liquor store has moved to its headquarters of over 100 years at Jalan Kampung Pantai, which is still operating today, and has changed its mode of operation. On the other hand, the upper floor, where Kaya Residence is, was once a worker quarters.

Today, the old liquor store has transformed into a cozy little cafe with exposed bricks whereas the latter, Kaya Residence, has become a boutique guesthouse for your exploration in this historical city of Malacca. Definitely a fusion of old world charm and modern convenience! To add icing on the cake, the jars that were once filled with liquor in the old liquor store are now used as a decoration right in front of the cafe.
